A Message to the Southern Ohio Synod

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.
(Hebrews 12:1-2, NRSV)
Dear Southern Ohio Synod,
Thank you for the many ways you have engaged in this year’s election cycle: through prayer, intentional conversations, using the Civic Engagement resources from the ELCA and ELCA Advocacy, serving as polling places, and showing up to vote. Engaging in our local and national elections is both our civic duty and a way we serve our neighbors.
This morning, election results were announced across townships, cities, school districts, states, and the nation. Our prayers now turn to calls for faithful service from all elected leaders. May President Biden and Vice-President Harris continue to serve faithfully in the coming months, and may President-Elect Trump and Vice-President-Elect Vance lead with humility and integrity as they prepare to take office. We pray for a peaceful transition of power in January 2025. Grant all leaders the wisdom to see their power as a trust from God, meant for service to all. Help us, as a nation, to live in unity and peace with one another.
Our vocation as Christians is to continue to serve our neighbor, following in the example of Jesus. Our faith, a free gift of God’s grace, calls us to this work, not to earn or retain God’s love or salvation, but as a response to what we have already received. No matter any election results, God’s call continues. As Martin Luther has said: “God does not need your good works, but your neighbor does.”
Southern Ohio Synod, continue to look to Jesus, who is the source of our faith. Together, we will be bearers of God’s grace in our communities and across the Southern Ohio Synod.
In Christ,
Bp. Suzanne Darcy Dillahunt
